Lord of the Flies

entry of your choice. At first, I actually did not wanted to read the Lord of the Flies for my second blog book. Instead I wanted to read Animal Farm, but there was no more copies of Animal Farm, so I chose this novel, Lord of the Flies by William Golding, for my second blog book. Before I start to read this book, I thought this book will be very boring by looking at the cover of the book. As I start to read this book, it made me to change my mind. Briefly, this book, Lord of the Flies by William Golding, is about kids accidently land on the remote island by a plane crash and trying to survive and wait for people to rescue them on that remote island without any adults. In this book, one of the main characters called Jack had made me to think lots of things. Jack is the character that do all kind of thing for his benefit, even killing people. First of all, it made me to hard to understand why he is not helping each other and discuss together to find way to be rescued by people, but being so selfish. If people did not found them and did not come to rescue them, I think there will be only few kids, about two of three including Jack, will be left on that island, because I think Jack would killed all other kids for his benefit except for few kids that really fallow him. If I was Jack, I think I had regret about what I had done to kids, so I really think that Jack should had think deeply before he acts.

are there any settings in this novel which you have found to be beautiful? or disturbing? or memorable? describe these settings and comment on why they were meaningful to you.I think the most memorable setting in this story to me is the island where they had landed and trying to survive. The island that they had landed is uninhabited island. Which means no one had lived at there before, and uninhabited island is the setting where people always have some bad thoughts and opinions because of some of the movies that had made until now, so it made me to think little bit nervous. Even though this island is an uninhabited island, island it self could had represented as beautiful and peaceful setting, but the events and conflicts that had happened to kids on the island made the setting it self very disturbing. Since the kids are on the uninhabited island without any adults, they are finding their own way to live and making rules. Before the kids land on that island, I guess it was very peaceful and it was the best habitat for all the beasts that living at there, but the people had made it disturbing. People had start the war, so the kids had to go some where safe, but the kids had landed at the uninhabited island because of the plane crush. The fact that they landed at that island had already had damaged the island, but not only damaged island, they started to kill each other, so it had changed and made the image of island to some kind of chaos. This uninhabited island in the Lord of the Flies had made me to have another point of view about the uninhabited island.

please choose one passage from the novel that is significant to you. why is this passage meaningful? please type it into one of your entries and comment on what you think about the passage. While I was reading this book, there were lots of quotes that comes to my mind and made me think but the quote that was the most attract to me was one of the quote from chapter four, "Roger gathered a handful of stones and began to throw them. Yet there was a space round Henry, perhaps six yards in diameter, into which he dare not throw. Here, invisible yet strong, was the taboo of the old life. Round the squatting child was the protection of parents and school and policemen and the law." I think this passage in the novel is very meaningful because it show the beginning and important step of the kids starting to changing into savagery. They starts to cracks and beginning to show savage side of human that who has more power use force to overwhelm the smaller powers, and most of the boys lose their respect for parents and other forces. These forces breaks out as the savage instinct replaces the instinct for civilization among the boys. However, this quote had represented and showed the important step of kids starts to changing and show the savagery.

Lord of the Flies

what is the mood of this novel? do you find this novel saddens you in any way? why?I think the mood of this novel is basically about the darkness and violent side of the human beings. Jack and Ralph's conflicts had made me to think like that. Since they are all kids, I thought they were going survive on the island very well by helping each other and make better condition, but Golding showed us the darkness of the human that even kids tries everything to survive on the island. More over that, they even wants to have the control of others. Jack also had done many violent action such as beats one of kid in his group just for showing other kids what he will do to them if they do not fallow him and even killing. This shows how fast and how easily the darkness and violent side of the human beings can overwhelm the good side of the human. During reading this novel, I actually had found some saddens in some way because if we think in different point of view, they are all about the same ages and they are killing each other to survive on that island. I do not know whether they had same thought with me or not but I think if I was Jack or one of them, I would be very regret about killing others and disturb others for me to survive on the island. It would be the saddest thing in the world to kill friends to keep their own lives. I just want that no body will face same situation with situation in the novel and our world will be peaceful.

Lord of the Flies

what is the climax of this novel? what happens? how do the events of this novel make you feel?

I am not sure where the climax part of this novel is, but I think the climax part of this novel is part where kids on the island divides into two different groups. Since I learned climax is that part where main character make a great decision and that great decision can not be returned, I think this part is where main characters, Ralph and Jack, make great decision to divide into two different groups being enemies and can not go back and regroup together because Jack's group had refused what Ralph had said and they have a opposite thoughts. Jack think that hunting is the most important thing and Ralph think that building house and keep fire so that they can be rescued by the adults are the most important. After they had divided into two groups, Jack's group had killed, steal and do all kinds of things for his benefit. This part of events of the Lord of the Flies makes me feel that Jack's group had become too savage and little bit scary. This part make me think that Jack's group is too savage because they acts like a native people at that island. They hunt beasts, dance, put paints on their face, and even kill others group people like the natives. This part also make me scary because I can not imagine how can a person I know kills another person I know not because of revenge or something like that, but just for that person's own benefit. After I read climax part of the story, I once more realized the importance of the choosing right decision.

Lord of the Flies

who are the main characters in the novel? do you like them? why or why not? what is special about them? what do they reveal about the universal human experience?
In this novel, I think there are more than one main characters. First, Ralph is the one of the main characters. I am not sure whether I like this character or not because even though this character is the protagonist in this novel, he does not do many things so I am not sure whether I like this character or not. Special thing about him is that even though his enemy, Jack's group, against them with violent, Ralph does not use violent to against them, but wants to solve problem with talk and be peaceful. Ralph reveals the people who do not wants violent and wants to solve problems with make agreement with others. Second, Jack is the character who conflicts with Ralph because of the different opinions. I do not like this character, Jack, because I think that he is too violent, selfish and like the communist government nowadays. Doing things with out any agreement of others. Special thing about Jack is that he wants to have power to rule the kids, kills, beats and disturb others for his own benefit. Jack reveals people who wants violent and do not fallow the rules even though there is the rules. One another character that I think is the main character is Piggy. I like piggy because he is the smartest boy on the island. Special thing about Piggy is that his glasses represent a very important thing in the novel because it is the only way that boys on the island can stat the fire. Piggy reveals people who are innocent and people who gets damage for doing nothing wrong.

Lord of the Flies

are there any current situations in the world that relate to the novel? what are they, and how do they relate? does the novel shed any light on how current situations could be resolved or "fixed"? Yes, I think there are some of current situations in the world that is like situation like in the novel. In our world, there are all kind of people. People who follow the laws, help other people, and tries to make a peaceful world. Also, there are people who does not fallow the law, who wants power, being selfish and disturb others for what they need. People murdering other people and get what they need is one great example that is exist in our current world society. Even though murdering is against the law in every countries, still there are lots of people who do not fallow the law and murdering people for their benefits. But the problem is that for most of the people, after they murders someone, they feel regret about it. Which means people does not think deeply and just do as what they think. This situation is related to the novel because Jack's group murders Ralph's group without thinking deeply just for their benefits. In this novel, I do not think it shows how to fix the situation. The reason why I think this book does not show how to fix the problem is because at first, they were not able to make peaceful community by them selves and they were out of control before the adults come to rescue the kids. But they all had been rescued by the adults because the adults saw the smoke and come to rescue them. But the greater problem was that they were taking to the greater wars. Which means there is no hopes.

Lord of the Flies

what is the major theme of this novel? why is this theme important to a teenager living in 2007? The major theme of this novel, Lord of the Flies by William Golding, is the human instinct of good within the civilization and evil within the savagery. On one side, people tries to help others to make better situation, and tries be peaceful. But on the other side, people wants to overwhelm others, being selfish, and disturb others to get what they need. In the Lord of the Flies, it shows how kids changes in a nature condition where no adults are exist and no such things like rules are exist to find their own ways to survive in the remote island. As time passes, some kids, for example Jack, shows selfishness and savage side of human instinct and go wild, not thinking deeply and do whatever he want to overwhelm others to have power and have control of others. But opposite of that, there are also some kids, for example Ralph, that do not go wild and trying to help each other to survive from the island. I think place where good is exist, evil is exist along the good. I think this theme is important to a teenagers because it shows the importance of depth of the thinking. Nowaday teenagers usually do not think deeply enough and just take in the action. Since teenagers do not think deeply enough and act, they are easily to make mistakes and be regretful, so teenagers should think deeply enough and take in the action before evil overwhelm the teenagers and make them savage.
